About these Graphs

Pitch-by-pitch data for the 2008 season was generously provided by InfoChimps, by way of Major League Baseball's Gameday database. Mr Flip's PitchFX Diagram gives a schematic overview of the data fields. For the top strip, velocity distributions for pitches are visualized with kernel density plots, rather than histograms, to achieve smoother curves and avoid binning artifacts. The bottom strip of charts encode two dimensions with color -- blue or red hue indicates pitch velocity -- while the lightness or darkness of the hue indicates how many pitches were thrown in a given region. Images were generated using R, Deepayan Sarkar's Lattice package, and served by Jeff Horner's rapache, on a web chassis pulled by magic ponies in the sky. Critiques, complaints, comments?
